Advent Calendar – Day 25 – Dalgona Coffee

Yields: 2 Servings Difficulty: Easy Prep Time: 5 Mins Total Time: 5 Mins

For our last Advent Calendar surprise, we’ve got for you a blast from the past: Dalgona Coffee! As Janette Bright (IHR, PhD Candidate) notes the Dalgona coffee “appeared on social media earlier in the summer and while it looks very clever if you follow most recipes it is very sweet, and you get a strong caffeine hit.  Decaffeinated coffee granules (instant coffee) might work better, as might sugar substitute (eg, Stevia).”

If you didn’t try this coffee during Lockdown No. 1, maybe you will want to try it as a treat before a study session or some energy boost during this Holiday season.

Many thanks for joining us this year for our Virtual Advent Calendar. We loved receiving your submissions and trying your recipes. We are sincerely hoping to see some of you in the New Year!

  • For two servings you need 3 Tablespoons of instant coffee, 2 Tablespoons of sugar (or sugar substitute) and mix with about 3 Tablespoons of boiled water until thick and fluffy such that it will stand in stiff peaks.
  • You then need 300-400ml of milk poured into two glasses (again you can experiment with non-dairy types, but I used semi-skimmed). The milk can be heated for a hot drink or be used for a chilled one. It is best served in a glass (if hot, heat-proof) so you can see the two-tone effect.
  • Then divide the coffee foam and pour on top (see photo).
